THE CAPITOL HILL GANG
"Roman Catholics will again comprise the largest denomination represented in the next Congress, with 155 members, or 29% of the total, according to a breakdown compiled for the past three decades by Menendez. Nationwide, 24.5% of residents are Catholic, according to the American Religious Identity Survey. [Remember the fuss made during John F. Kennedy's campaign for presidency, METAXY].
"Next are Baptists, followed by Methodists, Presbyterians, Jews and Episcopalians.
"The growth in recent decades in the number of Catholics, from around 100 to current levels, and in the number of Mormons, from a half-dozen to 15, is one trend Menendez has tracked.
"And of course there is the election to the House of the first Muslim, Keith Ellison of Minnesota, and Buddhist Reps. Mazie Hirono of Hawaii and Hank Johnson of Georgia."
As an aside to what I've highlighted, in this article is said, Democrats' religious spin is likely to veer towards the poor and the environment rather than restricting gay marriage and promoting prayer in schools as "values" issues. How delightfully liberal.
Faithful America
Who says Americans would never vote for nonbelievers, i.e., atheists and agnostics? And, well, drum roll ...
There are 6 house democrats who are "non-affiliated" (unchanged from the 109th congress), possible atheists or agnostics. Could be deists. Could be a combination. It would be a big coincidence if all 6 were deists. All are House democrats. There are two Buddhist democrats in the House, Hank Johnson and Mazie Hirono.
Possible godless:
Neil Abercrombie
Tammy Baldwin
Earl Blumenauer
John Olver
John Tierney
Mark Udall
The new congress is more reflective of the diversity of US citizens than ever before.
CHEATSHEET
"Evangelical Christians—a category that cuts across denominational lines—are even more underrepresented, [than Lutherans] said Furman University political scientist James Guth, all the more so after this year’s defeat of Republican incumbents like Reps. John Hostettler of Indiana and Jim Ryun of Kansas."
